The following note is from John Carr: Several descendants of Benjamin Carr, father of Caleb and Robert, are trying to define the genetic signature of their line. I am assisting them as administrator of the Carr Family DNA Genealogy Project. Do you happen to be in contact with any living descendants of the Carrs of Rhode Island, or any male Carrs for that matter. There may have been other genetic Carr lines in the north east back in the 17th through 19th century who have adopted Caleb and Robert as ancestors. As a result some genetic signatures may not match others in the project, so we need as deep a definition of all the families in the region as is possible to obtain. Genetic testing shows the probability of biological link between males (Y Chromosome) and females (mitochondrial DNA).

An interesting study would be a DNA study of the descendants of Stephentown. Such an isolated population amy have a great deal of interrelatedness, which makes it a good candidate for genetic studies.

The Carr project participants are interested in obtaining the genetic signatures of as many Carr men as possible to develop a genetic Carr Family tree. This will enable Carr Families to see who they are most likely related to and where best to search for their ancestors.

Any assistance you can provide with linking us to more Carr men and with Carr family history is greatly appreciated. http://www.carr-genealogy.com/

Thank you.

Best wishes for the New Year,

William Henry Carr, son of Erastus Whitman Carr of Stephentown

The Kers, Kerrs, of Cessford were a famous border family. One branch, the Earls of Roxburghe, spelling it Ker; the other, the Earls of Lothian, writing it Kerr. Mark Kerr, was Abbot Newbattle, 1584. His son, Mark Kerr, was made Lord of Newbattle, 1587, and Earl of Lothian in 1606. His wife was Margaret Maxwell, daughter of John Maxwell, the 4th Lord Herries. Of their 31 children, Robert Kerr, first son, 2nd Earl of Lothian, died without heirs. Anne Kerr, second child married William Ker, her 4th cousin of the Roxburghe line, and by special charter of the King inherited the Kerr estate. (Robert Ker, of the Roxburghe line, was bestowed the first Earl of Ancrum in 1633. His son, William Ker, after his marriage with Anne Kerr, was created 3rd Earl of Lothian in 1631 and inherited his father's title Earl of Ancrum).

John Kerr, 2nd son, 3rd child of Mark Kerr, 1st Earl of Lothian, was granted a small estate near Ancrum. He assumed the ancient Celtic name Ankrom, and encouraged Celtic customs and language in preference to the English speech and manners of the titular line of the family. He was known as John Kerr of Ankrom and his descendants as the Kerr-Ankroms, which name later was registered as Ankrom in Scottish family history. Of this family, William Ankrom (Ancrum) resided in England and came to Virginia before 1700. He was styled "an English gentleman of means", but not an ardent supporter of English royalty.

"The Carr (Kyr, Kjr, Kerr, Carre) Family compiled by Francis Lee Thurman, MD on his trip to Scotland in the 1930's.

The line of this family goes even back to the old Testament times, to a tribe which were Standard Bearers to the King. The name in Hebrew is KIR. See Isaiah 22;6, also Isaiah 15:1. For places probably named for the tribe, see 11 Kings 3:25, Isaiah 16;7, Jeremiah 48; 31, Joshua 12:28, Amos 1:5, and 9:1, 2 Kings 16:9. But more recently all the KERS, KEERS, CARRES, CARRS in the British Isles, Scotland and Ireland are descended from a Baron KERR who went over to England from Normandy with William the Conqueror and some of his descendants to Scotland and others to the north of Ireland. This Baron KERR is one of the family of King Ollyf Kjrs, whoreigned in Normandy in 1005. Baron RERR's name stands on the earliest records of the Normans in England the rool of Battle Abbey, and edifice founded by William I to commemorate the victory which he gained over Harold on the 14 Oct 1066.

The name of KERR, or according to the Norman orthography, KARRE, stands conspicuously on this roll of fame, as corroborated by the celebrated chroniclers, Hollinshed and Dushesne. It has been said that the family was a noble and illustrious one in France before the Conquest, and William's companion was one of its members who became the progenitor of the England and Scottish Ker's, the former being no doubt the parent stock, which probably was settled at Kershall in Lancaster. Several of the names are mentioned by Prinne and others appear on the Ragman Roll, that ancient document which contains a list of those who swore fealty to Edward 1, 1272-1307. Two members of the family of KER, probably from Lancashire stock came to Scotland about the close of the 14th century where they settled in Roxburghshire, founding the two great families of Cessfore and Fernieherst or Kerashaugh as Ferneherst was first called. It is not know whether the two Anglo - Normans were brothers but they were probably related. Their names are John and Ralph, the former being ancestors of the Kerr's of Cessford, originally styled Auldounburn and the Forest of Selkirk - the latter being the progenitor of the Ker's of Fernieherst, first styled Kershaugh.

Both families were supporters of the great house of Douglass at that time paramount on the Scottish Border. But a more ancient family than either of the same name, those original derivation is probably from some Anglo - Norman race, existed in the west of Scotland at least 130 years before the Border Chieftan rose up. They no doubt like the Fernieherst and also the Lancashire stock called the property they had acquired after themselves for it was named Kersland, and to their honor and credit, they held it for 500 year. Though during that time it sent twice into female line: through the failure of sales; the name and title of Kersland being however continued by assumption, but owing to the improvidence and folly of the last John KER, ironically called honest Kirkland, in that well known Jacobits song called "The Awkward Squab" it was wasted.

The noble house of Lothian is derived from the two great Border Houses of Cessford, and Ferniehurst, and being also Earls of Ancrumthey derive from and represent the Ferniehursts through their Ancrum Ancestor. In treating of the two great houses of Cessford and Fernieherst, priority should be given to former, their chief being a Duke - the Duke of Roxburgh- although during the warfare that existed so long between them, neither would concede the superiority of the other. The Fernieherst race can show the oldest charter, or at least they possess evidence of having the most ancient holdings. A warned writer considers the Fernieherst the older, because they carried the same arms of the KER'S in England and France, without any difference or Change. The word KER signifies strength and carries this same meaning in the Bible. The first notable personage of the family was John KER of the Forest Selkirk, who in 1357 obtained from John de Copeland, an English warden all the lands and tenement of Auldtounburn with their pertainments which formerly belonged to "Adam of Beale" and next year received from William of Blackdeane part of the lands of Mow and Auldtunburn, being the territory which is now represented in the name of Mowbough extending to the English border at the summit of the Chevoits. This John KERR of Selkirk Forest, living in 1357 was father of Henry, sheriff of Roxburgh, whose son Robert was father of Andrew of Auldbounburn. This Andrew Kerr had three sons. From the youngest came the Kers, of Gateshaw and from the second came the Kers of Linton. The eldest was father of Walter of Cessford who had two sons. From the youngest descended the Kers of Delphinstoun, Littledeane and Morrison. The eldest Sir. Robert of Caverton, died in his father's lifetime, leaving two sons, George of Faudonside and Sir Andrew, who succeeded to his grandfather in Cessford. It was this Sir George of Faudonside, who was a prominent factor in getting rid of David Rizzio, who the nobles thought too intimate with Mary Queen of Scots. Ruthven, George Douglass, George Kerr of Faudonside, Lindsay and Darnley (Mary's husband) and other nobles came into the presence of the Queen and took Rizzio out and Douglass buried his dagger in his back before he crossed the threshold.

Sir Andrew had three sons. From the first are descended the Dukes of Roxburg. The second had a son, Mark, who was created Earl of Lothian, 1606. But the title became extinct in 1624. The third son of Sir Andrew of Cessford was ancestor to Sir Thomas of Fernieherst whose son by his first marriage was created Lord Jedburgh in 1622. By this second marriage he had two sons- Sir James who became Lord Jedburgh and Robert, Earl of Somerset in 1613. Robert of Ancrum, Uncle of the above named Sir Thomas had two grandsons, William from whom descended the Kerr's of Linton, and Sir Robert created Earl of Ancrum in 1633 and was succeeded in title by Charles, son of his second marriage. His grandson by his first marriage, Robert, fourth Earl of Lothioam also succeeded to the Earldom of Ancrum and was created Marquis of Lothiam in 1701. The present (1934) Marquis of Lothiam is his direct descendent. The direct line of the Kerr (Carr) family as worked out is follows:

John Kerr of Selkirk Forest 1357 was the father of Henry Kerr, Sheriff of Roxburgh was the father of Robert Kerr was the father of Andrew Kerr of Auldtounburn was the father of Walter Kerr of Cessford was the father of Sir Robert Kerr of Caverton was the father of Sir Andrew Kerr of Cessford was the father of Sir Thomas Kerr of Fernieherst was the father of Sir James Kerr of Crailing, the brother of Earl Robert Kerr of Somerset, the favorite of King James 1, was the father of Sir Robert Kerr, Colonel of his Majesty's Service, was the father of Sir Thomas Carr, was the father of Major Thomas Carr, William Carr, Robert Carr, and John Carr Gentleman.

This brings the line of descent down to the Virginia Carr's. Robert Carr & John Carr, Gentleman, settled south of the James River near Carrsville and for the purpose of this genealogy we pursue their line no further and confine ourselves to the lines of Major Thomas Carr and William Carr Gentleman. Major Thomas Carr and William Carr, Gentleman, were sons of Sir Thomas Carr & Mary Garland. Exactly when they came to Virginia is not definitely known, but they were suppose to have come on account of their loyalty to Stuarts and persecution of Cromwell. A grant of 25,000 aces of land was made to their family from King Charles, in the Counties of Louisa, Albemarle, King & Queen, etc. Written on parchment and granting this land "to our trusty and beloved Thomas Carr, Gentleman". In Edson Carr's book on the Carr family he designates them as coming from the Border land between England and Scotland. Sir Thomas Carr lived at "Topping Castle" in Carolin Co., Virginia. In the Abemarle group of places that came under the Carr's grants, were "Burnt Mills", "Carr's Book", "Dunlora", "Glenecho", "Ridge", known later as "South West Mountains". John Carr lived on Chestnut Mountain Ridge.

This is a copy from Dr. Francis Lee Thruman's writing.

Stephentown Carrs

My ancestry includes the Carr family of Stephentown. I had heard the name Carr all my life but honestly, I am sure that my mother never knew she was related to the Carrs who were living in Stephentown at the same time she was there. The Carr connection started for Mom with Joshua Carr and Sarah Whitman Carr's daughter Sarah Parthena, who married my mother's great grandfather, Paschal (Chouinard) Sweener. Both Sarah and Paschal had passed away before Mom was born.

The Carr ancestry that I will start with here is that of my mother's line. I will fill it out to include other families, and will add as much history as I can find. This family was prolific and it spread throughout the United States, but I will concentrate on the Stephentown branch. When you see * beside a name, it simply means that that is my direct line.

Robert Carr born in London, England, Oct. 4, 1614, came to America with his brother Caleb, on the ship Elizabeth Ann, commanded by Capt. Roger Cooper, which sailed from Londan May 9, 1635. From an old shipping record in London, we find the following: "Calebb Carr, aged 19, and Robert Carr, aged 21, described as a "tayler", sailed for New England, on the 9th of May, 1635, in the "Elizabeth Ann." These two brothers who were both minors, were sent America after the death of their parents, to live with their uncle William, who had previously settled in Bristol, R.I. A few years later the two brothers settled in Newport, R.I.

He married (1) Eleanor Spencer on December 15, 1776. She was daughter of William and Mary Spencer and was born in East Greenwich, RI on June 22, 1754. He married (2) Mary Brown Green (widow) on September 26, 1798. She was b. May 7, 1752 and d. in Stephentown on January 19, 1806.

According to Arthur Carr: "Deacon Edward Carr has been described as an unusual man, as far as his marital experiences were concerned. He was 5 times married. The history of Renssealer County casually mentions the six wives of Deacon Edward. Five however seems like the more correct number.

A little study of this remarkable man's record will reveal that although Edward Carr was first married at age 23 and died a married man at the grand age of 92, and although he was at that time enjoying the companionship of his fifth wife, he was in all those years never longer than 8 months in singleness and sorrow. I hope that it will not be misunderstood when I state that for a number of years before his death he was both blind and deaf.

The oldest burying place is in Stephentown, NY is thought to be the Stephentown Baptist Cemetary, started in 1795-96. Many of Stephentown's first settlers are buried there, including Deacon Edward Carr and his 5 wives. One of his wives, it is said, died in church and bears a unique tombstone inscribed:

"In Memory of Mary Carr, wife of Deacon Edward Carr, who departed this life January 19, 1806 in the 54th year of her age. Well to meeting she did go. Sang praises with the saints below. Rose in prayer as we did see and God took her home to praise Him eternally."

The Deacon's headstone reads:

"This stone erected by the three eldest daughters of Spencer Carr"

Edward Carr built his home in Goodrich Hollow, near Kinderhook Creek. He organized the Baptist Church with the help of Joseph Rogers and Jonathan Howard. Another settler in the south part of Stephentown was Caleb Carr, Edward's brother.

Gravestone of Deacon Edward Carr. Upon visiting the "burying ground" in Stephentown, Stephentown Association Cemetery, it was interesting to see that the Deacon is buried, surrounded by his wives and children. Brigader General Caleb16 Carr III (*Caleb15, *Caleb14, *Caleb13, *Caleb12, *Robert (Sir Baronet)11, *Benjamin (Sir)10, *Sir William9, *Sir John8 Kerr, *Sir Lord Andrew7, *Thomas (Jr.)6, *Thomas (Sr.)5, *Andrew4, *Robert3, *Henry2, *John1) was born August 06, 1778 in Stephentown, New York, and died February 06, 1840 in Williamstown, Mass.. He married (1) Theresa Bull 1815 in Stephentown, New York. He married (2) Lucinda Harris 1815 in Stephentown, New York.

Notes for Brigader General Caleb Carr III: General Caleb Carr was colonel of a regiment of state militia during the War of 1812, and in 1814, when the call came for every able bodied man to hasten to the defense of Plattsburgh, Col. Carr was foremost in action; but the progress of the troops was so slow, he asked permission of the commanding general to take 1500 men and hasten on the Plattsburgh with all possible dispatch. The permission was granted and he arrived there in time to help turn the tide of battle in our favor, while the balance of the troops did not arrive until the battle was all over. For this meritorious conduct on the part of Col. Carr, he was promoted to the generalship of all the state militia, which rank he held as long as he lived. He also was a member of the state legislature one term.

He moved to Williamstown, New York in 1828, where he died Feb. 6, 1840. "The files of Rensselaer County Deeds contain two conveyances from Caleb and Lucinda. One dated 1 Mar 1827 conveys land to Benjamin Chase. The other, which is dated 16 Jul 1829, conveys land to Simeon Kettle and cites a land grant from Stephen Van Rensselaer to Caleb Carr of land on the Black River. One might surmise that these deeds roughly date the removal of Caleb and Lucinda to Williamstown, NY where they spent the remainder of their lives. Caleb was a very public spirited man. His first public service seems to have been as Colonel in the State Militia. After the war of 1812 he became the head of the New York State Militia with the rank of General. He also served one term in the New York Legislature. His attainment of the rank of General was the result of his brilliant leadership at the battle of Plattsburg. He, as a Colonel of Militia, was with the troops hastening to repel the British troops that were advancing down the Champlain Valley. Being dissatisfied with the speed that they were making, he asked permission to take a picked force of fifteen hundred men and push on ahead. This he was allowed to do, arriving in time to greatly assist in turning the British back. Sylvester's 'History of Rensselaer Co' says that Caleb was a Brig General in the war of 1812. It also says that he was an early innkeeper at Stephentown. In this it is my opinion that the author has confused the General with his father." The Carr Book, by Arthur Carr, pp 96-7

He was also an innkeeper in Stephentown Center.

General Carr is listed as a member of Friendship Lodge #95 in Stephentown, NY in 1828, along with his brother, Joshua. The Masonic Friendship Lodge #95 was instituted Sept. 1, 1802. Between June 1827 and 1828, there were 25 members registered. The Masonic Order, founded on the Bible, complemented the Bible, teaching all church members to "live in peace and fellowship with their Masonick brethern." The Lodge was dissolved on March 13, 1837.(From Stephentown Historic Album #3)

Notes for *Pascal Sweener: Pascal died of "senile gangrene - right foot, and legs part affected." From death entry in Stephentown records.

The informant of his death was George Sweener, presumably his son, George W. Sweener.

Pascal was 91 yrs. 4 mos. 18 days old when he died and was a widower. Sarah had died three years earlier. His was listed as a farmer.

Uncle Pete says that Pascal ( or Pasqual as he called him) owned a saw mill on Black River Road. The sawmill could cut one log an hour.

From Stephentown New York Heritage Center Living Gravestones collection:

d. 26 May 1914, according to Horace Bateman's record book 1878 owned F89 1899 owned F84

Writer doesn't know where last two entries are, though they obviously refer to tracts of land.

Notes from Anne Marie Sweener's files:

French translation of Sweener is Chouinard.

"Pascal came from Canada and settled in Hancock, Mass. He was a charcoal burner. Moved to Stephentown, N.Y. and settled on Black River Road until his death. Pascal owned an up and down waterpowered saw mill. It sawed one log an hour."

Uncle Pete took Clint and Tina to the approximate site of the old saw mill on Black River Road in July 1997. It looks very peaceful there now, with no indication that such a place had ever existed. Up and down the road you can still see several stone walls. Uncle Pete told us they were left from when they had surrounded the properties of the families who had lived there many years ago. He said that every time you see one of those stone fences, you know that a family had lived behind those stones. A couple of the families he talked about as having lived on Black River Road besides the Sweeners were the Carrs and the Silvernails. The Carrs were probably the family of Sarah Parthenia, who married Pascal.

On Pascal's death certificate, Paschal Chouinard is listed as father. No mother is listed. Pascal's birthplace is listed as Montreal, Canada.

He married (2) *Ada Belle Wheeler June 30, 1899 in Stephentown, New York, daughter of *Milo Wheeler and *Mary Houghtling. She was born April 02, 1876 in Stephentown, New York, and died March 23, 1951 in Stephentown, New York.

Died 18 April 1936 Registered Democrat 1926 Registered for draft 12 June 1917, age 44, general farming, b. 8 Aug. 1873

Was constable in 1921.

From newspaper clipping (encapsulated in Rhoda Horton's murder article), "Wilson Sweener pleaded not guilty to the charge of bigamy. He is charged with having married Maude Whitman on Sept. 5, 1893 and with having prior married to Ada Wheeler at Stephentown. Warren McConihe, he announced was his counsel." Appeared before JP 25 July 1932, disorderly conduct against Parker Poole.

Lived on Black River Road at the time of his death. Said to have very red hair. Gave Uncle Pete (Nelson Willis Sweener) the nickname of PETE. Uncle Pete has no idea why, as Wilson died when he was 3 years old and no one else seems to know why either.

From the notes of Ann Marie Sweener:

"Wilson was a farmer and a logger. He and his family lived on Black River Road in Stephentown, N.Y. Wilson had one of the first sawmills in Stephentown."

It is said that Wilson was abandoned by his natural parents, Andrew Dodge and Ellenor Kittle. There were are couple of stories, one being that he was abandoned in a corn field, the other being that he was left with the Sweeners. The logical one is the last, as we know what the names of Wilson's birth parents are, his natural siblings, birth dates, etc.

Written concerning his funeral:

Wilson Sweener Died April 17, 1936

"The funeral of Wilson Dodge Sweener was largely attended Monday afternoon from his residence in Stephentown Center, N.Y. Rev. Oscar Arnold officiated. The bearers were: Stephen Mattison, Frank Cole, Harry Launt, and Willis Launt. Internment was in Garfield Cemetary. Mr. Sweener was born in Hancock, Mass. on August 8, 1872, but spent most of this life in Stephentown Center, New York. Death came as a great shock to his many friends and neighbors, although he had been ill health for several years. Survivers are his wife, Mrs. Ada Wheeler, daughter, Mrs. Willis Goodermote, 2 sons, Ulysses of Stephentown and Nelson of Stephentown Center. Six grandsons and six granddaughters."

Notes for *Ada Belle Wheeler: Gladys Sweener lived with Ada from the time of Wilson's death. Uncle Pete said that it was because Gladys didn't want Ada to be lonely. Gladys lived with Ada until her death in 1951, Gladys having married in 1949 and having 2 children in 1950. Tina's first Christmas was spent in this home. The first tree was a tree branch in a trash can.

Nelson Sweener says he always got along with her and loved her. He told Tina a story about Ada Belle telling him that she would love to go to the Empire State Building. When he was in the service, he went and got her a post card of the Empire State Building, so that she could see what it looked like. However, by the time he could get home and give the card to her, she had died. He placed the card in her casket with her, so that it would always be with her.

Captain Calvin Carr, who is deeply versed in the current affairs of the lakes, and who has a vivid remembrance of the events that occurred away back in the 'forties, is at this writing engaged in the vessel and insurance business in Chicago, and is highly esteemed by lake men, who generally place great confidence in his views concerning the conditions which regulate lake commerce, and their bearing on future events. He is a man of dignity and refinement, and lives much within himself, although his stately form is one of the most familiar about the marine offices in Chicago, where he has carried on business during a period of twenty-five years. His forefathers came to the colonies in 1620, landing at Plymouth. His grandfather, Joshua Carr, was born in New York State, and settled in Rensselaer county, N. Y. in an early day. Two brothers, Caleb and James (1), settled in Rhode Island in 1635, and our subject's grandfather was a descendant of James (1).

Captain Carr, the subject of this article, was born in Oswego county, N. Y., March 4, 1835, a son of Caleb Carr, the eldest son of Joshua. The father and mother moved west, locating near Horicon, Wis., where they operated a large farm for thirty-five years. He died at the age of seventy-two years, from paralysis, induced by a severe injury received. His wife, who bore the maiden name of Jane Smart, and was a native of New York State, lived to the advanced age of eighty-four years.

The Captain remained at home, assisting his parents and attending school until he reached the age of sixteen. In the spring of 1851 he determined to adopt the life of a sailor, and shipped as boy in the brig Arcadia. The next two seasons he sailed in the barque Norman. In 1854 he came out in the Seminole, but closed the season in the Saxon with Capt. John Davis, going with him in the schooner Hungaria the next season. Being an active, intelligent young man, he soon attracted the attention of his captain, who appointed him mate, in the spring of 1856, on the schooner Indiana, he continuing in that berth until September, 1857, when he was promoted to the command of the schooner Augustus Ford. From this time until he retired from active duty on shipboard he was master of several notable vessels. In the spring of 1858 he was appointed master of the Syracuse; in 1859 master of the Maple Leaf, sailing her two seasons; 1861-62 he again sailed the schooner Syracuse; and the next three years he was master of the bark Champion, at that time the largest vessel on the lakes. In the spring of 1866 he assumed command of the Southwest, and in 1867 he was appointed master of the bark Northwest, sailing her four consecutive seasons. In 1871 he was chosen weighmaster for the Chicago Board of Trade, and held that office two years. In 1873 he joined the schooner Maringo as master, sailing her two seasons.

In 1875 Captain Carr retired from the lakes, and became a marine agent for the Orient and Mercantile Mutual Insurance Companies, engaging the next year with Capt. W. M. Eagan in the charter and commission business, remaining with him until 1881, when he established a vessel agency and insurance business on his own account, and he is still successfully engaged in that business. Socially he is a Royal Arch Mason.

On May 4, 1857, Captain Carr was united in marriage with Miss Caroline Allport, a daughter of Zachariah and Phoebe (Edwards) Allport, of Oswego, N. Y. Five children have been born to this union, but all have passed to the Master who said "suffer little children to come unto me." Willis, the eldest, was drowned at Ogdensburg, N. Y., in 1866; Frank died when but eighteen months old; the other three died in infancy. The family residence is at No. 6939 Perry street, Englewood, Chicago, Illinois.

The Carr family, as you can see, led into the Sweener family, and is recorded here because, that is my family. Of course, members of the Carr family married into many other families as well. Mention of some of them will exist, with no particular depth.

A note from William Carr:

My family was one of the first (if not the first) settlers of Stephentown before it was Stephentown and was given a land grant by Stephen Van Rensselaer close to the Massachucetts border. Killian Van Rensselaer was given the orginal land grants by the Dutch West India Company during the early 1600's ironically he never set foot in the new world. He sent his son Killian 11 to oversee and purchase lands from the Mohicans. The Van Rensselaer's alleged his orginal land grant was allong the west side of the Hudson just south of Albany north to what is now Saratoga co (Mohowk River) then East to about 15 miles into Vermont (About Bennington) which legitimized New York's claim to Vermont lands pre constitution days. Then south along the Hoosantonic River to just south of Stockbridge, Mass then west to its orginal starting point. When the English kicked out Peter Stuyvesant and the Dutch in about 1664 a new issue arose between the colonies as to where the colonal borders were that separated the New York colonie from the Massachusetts Bay and Connecticut Colonies. this was not a Royal issue but strickly a colonial issue. New York Governor claimed based upon the Van Rensselaer claim that their land grant was east to the hoosatonic River that flows south through Mass. and Conn. Massachusetts and connecticut claimed through English Royal Grant that their colonies borders within 15 miles east of the Hudson River. Connecticut settled first and Massachusetts settled after the french and indian war. Stephen Van Rensselaer Granted to the Carr family lands along the current border just after that conflict.

My line comes from Rhode Island and were in Stephentown by 1776 or earlier. He had married Elizabeth Very whose family came from Danvers and Salem Mass. her grandmother may have been Rebecca Nurse. Elizabeth Very's father had been in Stephentown before 1748. when she was born. Well enough of this tandum keep up the good work.
