The State of New York County of Albany, personally appeared before me, Jacob H. Clute Albany County Judge, and Judge of the Albany County Court, a Court of Record within and for said County, Ellen E. Houghtaling, aged twenty-four years, a resident of the town of Nassau in the County of Rensaelaer and state of New York, who, being first duly sworn according to law, doth, on her oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress approved July 14, 1862. That she is the widow of Hiram Houghtaling deceased, who was a private soldier in Company I, commanded by Lieutenant John Colville, in the Ninety-First Regiment of New York State Volunteers, commanded by Colonel Van Zandt in the war of 1861.

That her said husband died at the University Hospital in the city of New Orleans in the State of Louisiana on or about the first day of July A.D. 1863 from wounds received at Port Hudson on or about the 14th day of June 1863, being at the time of such wounds actively engaged in the service of the United States, such wounds being received in action while in the line of duty in the service of the United States and being at the time of his death in the service of the United States.


She further declares that she was married to the said Hiram Houghtaling of Stephentown, Renselaer County, N.Y. on the 20th day of March A.D. 1858, by one William F. Hurd, a minister of the gospel; that her name before her marriage was Ellen E. Beers and that ever since the death of her said husband, she has remained a widow, as will more fully appear by reference to the proof annexed. Annexed hereto is the deposition of the said minister by whom declarant and said deceased were married also the depositions of persons who have known them to have lived and cohabited together as man and wife, that there is no record of said marriage public or private other than an entry in the family Bible of said deceased and the declarant, that there were present at said marriage witnesses, the father and mother of this declarant, who now live at Stephentown aforesaid, Mrs. May Megley now living at Pine Plains, Dutchess County, N.Y. and other relatives and friends of the parties.

That during the existence of the aforesaid marriage, there were born to her and her said husband the following named children, who are now under the age of sixteen years, viz: Aner Augusta, born the 29th day of January 1860, and Hiram N. born the 11th day of March 1862, and no other children born to them, all of whom are still living and reside in the said town of Nassaw with this declarant. She also declares that she has in no manner been engaged in, or aided and abetted, the Rebellion in The United States. Ellen E. Houghtaling
