Descendants of *Coenradt Houghtaling

Generation No. 1

1. *COENRADT1 HOUGHTALING was born in Holland.

Child of *COENRADT HOUGHTALING is: 2. i. *MATHYS COENRATSEN2 HOUGHTALING, b. 1639, Holland; d. 1706, Coxsackie, New York.

Generation No. 2

2. *MATHYS COENRATSEN2 HOUGHTALING (*COENRADT1) was born 1639 in Holland, and died 1706 in Coxsackie, New York. He married *MARIA HENDRIKSE 1666 in Coxsackie, New York, daughter of *HENDRIK MARSELIS and *CATRYN DEN BERG. She died Aft. 1706 in Coxsackie, New York.

Notes for *MATHYS COENRATSEN HOUGHTALING: According to The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Vol. 101 Number 4 entitled: Mathys Coenradtsen Houghtaling of Coxsackie, New York and his Descendants by Constance Ross Ulrich:

The Houghtaling families in America stem from two immigrants to New York State in the mid-seventeenth century, both of Dutch origin, but probably unrelated: Jan Willemsen Houghtaling of Kingston, Ulster County and Mathys Coenradt Houghtaling of Coxsackie, Greene County.( Our family is decended from Mathys.)

Jan's descendants were sometimes recorded with the prefix "van" with indicates that Houghtaling was a place name. Cursory research in Holland shows the name appearing in the seventeenth enntury records of the province of Zuid-Holland as "van Hoogteijlingen". Mathys Coenradt and his descendants never used the "van". It is believed that he did not have a surname in Holland, but that the adopted the name Houghtaling about 1675, possibly twenty years after his arrival in America. In 1667 at Wiltwyck (Kingston) he was exposed to this surname when he appeared in court before Jan Willemsen Houghtaling, one of its magistrates, who had been using the surname as early as 1661.

The fifty or more variations in spelling, ranging from Hogdielen to Hultailen to Hoochtelink, represent a good example of phonetic recordings by Dutch, German and English clerks and ministers as this name became Anglicized and evolved into the present forms of Houghtaling, Hotaling, and Hotelling.

Mathy's Coenradtsen name first appeared on a list of boys and girls from the alshouse in Amsterdam, Holland, sho were being sent to the New World to work for the Dutch West India Company and to "increase the population of New Netherland". The list is dated May 27, 1655 and includes "Mathys Coenratsen, 16 years of age." One account of the unusual combination of names, Mathys Coenraets (the almshouse child) is probably identical with Mathys Coenraets of Albany, according to the late William J. Hoffman, an authority on early Dutch immigrants. He notes the apparent discrepancy in their ages, (the almshouse child having been born about 1639 and the Albany settler about 1644, but adds, "Ages as given in records were notoriously incorrect and these are not far apart."

Mathys is assumed to have arrived in America about 1655. He doesn't appear in records again until Nov. 8, 1667, when he appears in court at Kingston in a suit for wages due him from Reyn'Van Coelen. Again in 1668, he was brought into court for declaring, "Damn the King and the Devil fetch the King!" while chopping wood on a Sunday morning.

From 1668 on he lived in the Albany area. Testimony given by him at Albany in 1684 reveals his age then as "about 40", putting his birth date about 1644, a date corroborated by testimony of 1675/6, at which time he told the Court he was "about 32".

Most certainly he was a farmer who owned and traded pigs, horses and cattle. He is referred to as "plumber" in the invoice of the ship deWitte Kloodt under date 6 July, 1671.

Between 1670 and 1685 there are fourteen references to Mathys Coenradts or Mathys Houghtaling in the court records of Albany. From these it is possible to get a picture of his character and his way of life. He resided first "behind Kinderhook", sharing a farm with his father-in-law, Hendrick Marselis, in 1673, until Martin Gerritsen van Bergen, prominent real estate owner and Commissary, leased him "a certain farm lying at Kockxhachkingh heretofore occupied by Gysl Boogaert with a house and barn "for a period of six years (1675-1681), for the acknowledgment of "love and friendship". Upon expiration of this lease in 1681 he crossed the Hudson River to reside again in Kinderhook until 1683. That year he was back in Coxsackie where he remained. The 1697 census of the Manor of Rensselaerswyck lists him as head of household of two men, two women and three children, and in 1699 he took an oath of allegiance to the British Crown.

In 1691, Mathys Houtaling purchased from three Mohawk Indians "a parcel of woodland lying behind Koxhaghkye". In 1697, this same land was officially granted him by Governor Benjamin Fletcher, a representative of the Crown he had publicly defamed at Kingston thirty years before. The land conveyed by this grant comprised 3,500 acres of heavy wooded land in the Kalkeberg-Hills, west of Coxsackie, and took in most of presentday New Baltimore.

At the end of 1683, when the Albany Dutch Church records began, "Mathys and Maria Hoogtelling" were members. About 1666, Mathys married Maria Hendrikse, the daughter of Hendrick Marselis and Catherine Van den Berg. She probably survived Mathys, who died about 1706, but there is no evidence that she remarried.

Although no probate record has been found for Mathys, there is evidence that an unexecuted will exists to which earlier historians had access. In this will, Maria is named as his wife and is appointed executor, ingeriting his estate "as long as she remains a widow." If she remarried, his instructions were specific: "She shall convey...the rest of the estate to the testator's children, to wit, Conrad, Johannes, and Jacob Hoogtelling, Hendrick, Trentje, the wife of Richard Van den Berg, Rachel and Mathys Hooghtelinck, also Marga Morris taking the place of her mother, Styje, eldest daughter of the testator." One half of his land, identified in his will by patent date and described as "lying back and west of Koshagky," was bequeathed to his son Mathews "about 12 years old, because he is a cripple". For the remaining half, Mathews was to pay his brothers and sisters the appraised value. Conrad, named as "eldest son", was given a horse when his mother remarries or dies." Captain Jonas Dow was one of the appointd guardians of Mathews. All of the original paten appears to have been inherited by the descendants of Mathys's eldest son, Conrad, and Mathys's second daughter, Catryntje Van den Berg.

Another version reads: "The following is an abstract of the "Will of Mathys Hooghtling", from the un-published papers of Anna Hotaling. Anna Hotaling says she copied the will in about 1932 at the home of Dr. A.W. Van Slyke, Coxsackie, NY

Probate date: Sept. 1706 Albany Co., NY

"After the testator's death his wife Maria Hooghtelinck shall be administratrix and exectutrix of her whole estate personal and real nothing excepted, as long as she remains a widow.

When she marries again she shall receive the household furniture and a milch cow, also one third of the revenues from the land left by the testator which the law gives her, she shall, when she marries again convey by executors the rest of the estate to the testator's children, to wit, Conrad, Johannes, and Jacob Hooghtelinck, Trentje, the wife of Richard Van der Berg, Rachel and Mathewe Hooghteelinck, also Marga Morris taking the place of her mother Styje, eldest daughter of the testator. Then his land lying back and west of Koxhagky, in the aforesaid county, as granted by patent from the late Govenor Ben Fletcher, July 5, 1697, also the cattle (one cow as afore so excepted) and the farm implements shall go one half to the testator's youngest son, Mathews, about twelve years old, because he is a cripple, for the other half he is to pay this brothers and sisters the appraised value. Conrad as the eldest son, shall have a horse when his mother remarries or dies.

Capt. Jones Dow and ________ are appointed guardians of the minor child.

Later (after 1706) church baptism records indicate, but do not prove that Maria outlived Mathys, and I have been unable to find any indication of her remarrying".

Notes for *MARIA HENDRIKSE: The earliest records, 1683, of the Dutch Reformed church of Albany, NY, show Mattys Hooghteeling and Maria Hoochteeling as members. All birth and marriage dates of the frist two generations of the Hotaling Family come from the Dutch Reformed Church Records of Albany.

More About *MATHYS HOUGHTALING and *MARIA HENDRIKSE: Marriage: 1666, Coxsackie, New York

Children of *MATHYS HOUGHTALING and *MARIA HENDRIKSE are: i. CONRAD3 HOOGTEELING, b. Abt. 1667. ii. HENDRICK HOOGTEELING, b. Abt. 1669, Coxsackie, New York; d. Coxsackie, New York. Notes for HENDRICK HOOGTEELING: Re: Birth date: J. B. Beers, in History of Greene County, 1884, reports birth of this son, but his source is unknown. Probably died before 1706: not mentioned in his father's will, so it is assumed he died unmarried before his father, in 1706.

iii. ZEYTJE/STYJE/CHRISTINA HOOGTEELING, b. Abt. 1670. iv. JOHANNES HOOGTEELING, b. Abt. 1672. Notes for JOHANNES HOOGTEELING: No evidence of marriage or christening; 3 references in Albany records; as owner of a condemned sloop, 1698 (CCM),; on oath of allegiance list, 1699; and as a witness, 1714, Loonenberg Zion Church family baptizism.

3. v. *JACOB HOOGTEELING, b. 1676, Coxsackie, New York. vi. CATRYNTJE HOOGTEELING, b. Abt. 1680. vii. RACHEL HOOGTEELING, b. 1684. Notes for RACHEL HOOGTEELING: Baptized Dec. 28, 1684 (Albany Reformed Dutch Church)

Died unmarried. Unexecuted will of Sept. 4, 1745 mentions "cosen John Van den Berg and Robert Van den Berg, sister Catrina Van den Berg, and five cousens" (actually nieces, daughters of sister Catryntje); Mary van den Berg, Antje Van Santen, Regel Colyou (Rachel Collier), Dortee, wife of Teunis Hoghteling and Layda Bronk.

viii. MATHYS/MATTHEWS HOOGTEELING, b. 1694. Notes for MATHYS/MATTHEWS HOOGTEELING: Baptized April 29, 1694, Albany Reformed Dutch Church, witness: Annetje Harmenz, Marte Gerritsz (Van Bergen; a cripple.

Generation No. 3

3. *JACOB3 HOOGTEELING (*MATHYS COENRATSEN2 HOUGHTALING, *COENRADT1) was born 1676 in Coxsackie, New York. He married *JANNETJE JACOBSE VAN NOORSTRAND October 23, 1698 in Kingston, New York, daughter of JACOB VANNORSTRANDT and JENNETJE JACOBSEN. She was born Abt. 1665 in Half Moon, Saratoga, New York.

Notes for *JACOB HOOGTEELING: Jacob was living at "Roelof-Janssen Kil" (the well known creek that later formed the Dutchess-Columbia County border) at the time of his marriage to Jannetje Jacobse van Noorstrand, daughter of Jacob Jansen van Noorstrand and Jannetje Jacobse, born at "the Halve Maen" (Van Noorstrand Geneology 80). They were married in Kingston, where the bride then resided.

In the 1714 census of Dutchess County, Jacop Boogteeling appears as head of household of one male 16-60, two males under 16, three females under 16, and one female 16-60.

The Reverend Josua Kocherthal, the Palatine minister, recorded that on July 29, 1716, he married "Jan von Nordstrandt, widower, residing with Jacop Hochidihl near Rhinebeck and Belicka Caujun, widow of the late Fransa Caujun, residing with Henrich Chisem" (Lou MacWeathy, Book of Names). Jacob's residence is more clearly defined in the will of Robert Livingston of 1728, in which he names Jacob Houghtaling as one of his Livingston Manor tenants on the tract of land "lying on the soughwest side of Roelof Jansen's kill". As Jacob did not own this land, his name does not appear on the dutchess County list of freeholders. In the Book of Supervisors he is listed as a resident of North Ward from 1717 to 1730, of Rhinebeck Precinct in 1738 and 1739, and of Northeast Town from 1742 to 1779, the last time his name appears, when he wuld have been 82 years old. As each of these sections was formed from the preceding, it is unlikely that Jacob moved during his lifetime. In 1725, he was one of three "survayors of ye Fences" in his district (book of Supervisors 2:32 and in 1727 he was one of the two "overseers of ye Kings high Ways". No evidence of a will has been found.

Jacob and Jannetje Houghtaling had seven children authenticated by church records. In addition, two other daughters appear, because of their sponsorship at family baptisms, to have belonged to this family."

From New York Genealogical and Biographical Record Vol. 101 Number 4

At the time of their marriage Jacob was living at "Roelof-Janssen Kil", he was born at Coxsackie, NY. She was a resident of Kingston, born at Half Moon.

It would seem from just reading records that Jacob moved a number of times during his life. But in each case where he seemed to move, the area had just been divided, and he was still on the southwest side of Roelof-Janssen Kil, but the area had a new name. This area is now Dutchess Co. The last time his name is listed is 1779, at which time he would have been 82 years old.

Notes for *TOBIAS HOUGHTLING: Died at the home of his son Wilhelm, is buried in Langworthy Cemetary.

"No official record of his birth has been found, but his joint sponsorship with his wife, Maria Esselsteyn, of many family baptisms establishes his relationship to this branch of the family. In the 1790 and 1800 censuses he appeared as head of a household in Livingston, Columbia County, and in the 1810 census in Claverack, which was formed from Livingston. The size of his family, as shown in the census enumerations, is in agreement with Bible records. In 1795 he signed a petition demanding investigation into Livingston's title. He moved the LeRoy, Genessee County, with his son William and his daughter Elizabeth in 1828, and is buried in Langworthy Cemetary there as Tobias Hufelen". Information on the Williams family, sent by Dawn Sherman (dawnsherman732@hotmail.com)

I am the Daughter of Cora Williams Fray. She is the Daughter of James William Williams and Mary Lillian Hamilton. James was Elizabeth's brother. As you know, Elizabeth was married to Spencer. Uncle Spencer died before I was born. I was born, January 5, 1963 in Troy, NY. Here is as much information as I have on the Williams side.

Elizabeth Williams (M) Spencer Houghtling

James Williams (M) Mary Lillian Hamilton - James died June 19, 1991 and Mary died in 1998.

They are both buried in Elmwood Hill Cemetery, Troy.

There was also, Lottie Williams Brown, Joseph Williams and Betty Williams Face.

Aunt Betty Face is the mother of Elroy Face. He was a baseball player. He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and a few other teams. (He beat the Yankees in the 60's and that didn't set well with my dad! He's a BIG Yankee fan!! )

There is more on him in the Garfield/or Averill Park, NY sites as well as Aunt Betty.

Aunt Liz and my gransfathers parents were Alexander H Williams and Grace or Gracia Hassan(we are having a heck of a time trying to determine which). His death notice says he was the son of the late Alexander H and Gracia Hassan Williams. Grandpa was born in 1914. I notice you have Grace married to Alexander and not Gracia. After Alexander died, Grace or Gracia married William C Miller. I figure you probally know better than I do about which name is correct. I only know that my mom said that her grandmother was Gracia.(or so she believes) There is a Gracia on your site who was born 1817-died 1886. I hope that you can give me more information. I have one picture of Aunt Liz and a picture of my grandparents- James and Mary Williams. I will send them to you as soon as I can. My grandmother Mary Hamilton Williams, was the daughter of William Allen Hamilton and Estelle Maude McKenna. She was born in Canada.

"Garfield Hunter is Accidentally Shot"

"Lloyd Hotaling (sic) aged 17 years, was accidentally shot and killed while hunting in the woods between Garfield and Stephentown, NY, today. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hotaling of Garfield, and had gone rabbit hunting with his eight year old brother, Andrew, and the accident happened shortly after they had entered the woods.

It seems that the young man shot a rabbit and went to pick the animal up, placing his gun against a stone wall, in some bushes. In some way the lad slipped and fell against the gun, it is believed, and it was discharged, the shot entering some vital part of his body and killing him instantly. The little brother went for assistance."

She married *CHARLES H. MOON March 01, 1907 in Stephentown, New York, son of *JOHN MOON and *ALMIRA SEELEY. He was born April 14, 1876 in Arlington or Shaftsbury, VT., and died April 02, 1928 in Stephentown, New York.

Notes for *CLARA D. HOUGHTLING: Agnes (Clara's youngest child) was told by Clara's sister in law, Sophia Houghtling, that Clara and Charles were devoted to each other and to their children. They worked very hard. Clara was sickly.

Listed in School District # 7, The Garfield School.

More About *CLARA D. HOUGHTLING: Cause of Death: Lobar pneumonia Medical Information: She was attended by Dr. Antoinitte E. C. Russell from November 6 to November 12, 1925. She passed away at 9:15 pm on November 12. She had given birth to Agnes in September, 1925.

Notes for *CHARLES H. MOON: Some records state that he was from Shaftsbury, Vt. Other records state he was from Arlington, Vt. (I sent for his birth certificate and Vermont reports that there isn't one for him. We are starting to wonder if he was born in N.Y. like some of his siblings.) Not much is known at this date (3/20/1997) about the Moon family. We know that Clara died very young shortly after giving birth to her daughter Agnes in 1925, supposedly from lobar pneumonia. Unfortunatly, I never asked Gram Sweener, their daughter, Florence Doris, any questions about her family.

The 1900 census in Berlin, N.Y. shows: Charles born 1876 is 24 years old. He is a boarder, living with: Fred Adams and Charles Adams, apparently brothers, along with Suzetta Adams and Hellen Adams, relationship unclear. Charles was working as a farm laborer.

The 1920 census for Stephentown shows: Charles and family are living on East Road, Stephentown. Clara's brother Henry, wife Sophia and family are living on Garfield Road.

Eric Martinson found a Selective Service Card for a person we feel is our Charles. It reads as follows:

Charles John (?) Moon b. April 14, 1875 Employed - Walter Goold Nassau, RFD Farmer Permanent home/residence - East Nassau Registration date - Sept. 12, 1917/1919 age 43 Med. height Med. build Blue eyes Sandy hair. local board for div. 2 Rennselaer County State of New York Hoosick Falls

It is reported that Aunt Sophie said after Clara died that as long as he drew a breath, the family would not be separated. Three years later, Charles died of pneumonia and the children were all separated. For the most part they never reunited completely until between 20 and 33 years later.

In a conversation (in July, 1997) with Dorothy Hoffman Moon Miner, Roy Moon's widow, she told Tina that Roy never talked about his parents much at all, but did say that Charles had red hair. That conflicts with the draft card entry above, but that draft entry is probably not our Charles, though most of the statistics match. The middle name of JOHN doesn't correspond with the known middle initial of H that appears on most of the info relative to Charles.

More About *CHARLES H. MOON: Fact 1: June 12, 1917, Was 42 years old when he registered for the draft. Made his living on a farm.

May 13, 1915, Stephentown, New York. Notes for "CROSSED OFF RUSSELL" MOON: For this child, his birth certificate shows that he was to be named Russell, but the name appears with two lines through it, hence for purposes of indentification, we are referring to this child as "crossed off Russell". The birth order that appears on this certificate is - Number in order of birth - 5, Number of children born to this mother and now living - 5. However, on the next child's (Belle) birth certificate, the number in order of birth is 6, number of children living - 5, indicating that this child did not live.

There is question about a Melvin Amos Moon, who was embalmed on May 13, 1915. Given the dates of these two events, we are concluding that this child is indeed Melvin Amos, though we have yet to see anything with this name on it. We have sent for the documents, but have yet to receive them (July 1997).

Virginia Atwater of Stephentown New York provided the information with the name of Melvin Amos Moon being embalmed on May 15. No death certificate for this child was found in the Stephentown records, but the birth certificate for "crossed off Russell" was. We don't know where the name Melvin Amos came from.

vi. BELLE ELEANOR MOON, b. June 13, 1916, Stephentown, New York; d. December 08, 1968, Cambridge, N.Y.; m. (1) WILLIAM COLLEY; m. (2) IRVING LUTHER LABARREN, June 16, 1958, New Hampshire; b. 1894, Vermont. Notes for BELLE ELEANOR MOON: Never had children. Have several pictures of Belle with Doris.

There is great speculation whether or not Belle ever was married to Colley. She did marry in 1958 to Irving LeBarron. Certificate states that it was her first marriage. She is pictured in 1944 with Doris and family and William Colley is in the photo as well. This fact, coupled with the LeBarron marriage certificate, leads us to believe that she was indeed not married to Colley.

On Belle's birth certificate it reads: # of children born to this mother, including this birth - 6

  1. of children living - 5

Marriage Notes for BELLE MOON and IRVING LABARREN: Certificate lists his residence as East Hebron, Washington County, New York His age 64 years. Widowed. Second Marriage, Farmer, Birthplace Vermont.

Father listed at Nathan LeBarron Dead Birthplace New York Mother listed as Eva Mae Kent Dead Birthplace Vermont

Belle is listed as living in Washington County, age 42 single first marriage, occupation - housework, birthplace New York

He married LILLIAN SMITH 1946. She was born 1926 in Stephentown, New York.

Notes for LOUIS "JAKE" HOUGHTLING: Obit for Jake:

LOUIS H. HOUGHTLING

Louis H. Houghtling, 77, of Presbyterian Hill Road, died on Friday, May 21, at Samaritan Hospital in Troy after being stricken at his residence. A life-long resident of Stephentown, he was the son of the late Henry and Sophia Miller Houghtling and the husband of the late Lillian Smith Houghtling. Mr. Houghtling retired in 1979 from the Veterans Administration Medical Center Hospital in Albany where he was employed as Supervisor of the Housekeeping Dept. Mr. Houghtling was an Army Veteran of WW11. He was a former member of the STEPHENTOWN Fire Dept., and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. Survivors include two sons, John L. Houghtling and Wayne L. Houghtling, both of Wake Forest, NC and three grandchildren. Services were private for the family. Interment was in Garfield Cemetery, Stephentown, NY. Arangements were by the Perry-Komdat Funeral Chapel Inc., Averill Park, NY.

I met Jake in July, 1998, when Aunt Ann had a get together at her house with Uncle Lewis and Aunt Gloria. She invited Jake and he stayed the entire day. I got to talk to him about the family history, which he was very interested in. I gave him a copy of his direct Houghtling ancestors and he said that he was very glad that I did, and that he looked forward to reading it. Jake was a very sweet man, very quiet. He seemed to observe more that participate. I received a Christmas card from him last year, telling me that he hadn't been feeling well, but that he was still working on getting some Moon pictures that we had been told were in the possession of Robert Knapp's family. He visited with Aunt Ann and Uncle Ed quite often, but they never found out about his death until July. My first impression of Jake was that he was a lovely man, and I still feel that way. I graduated from New Lebanon Central School with Jake's son John, and never knew that he was my cousin.

19. ROY ELMER10 MOON (*CLARA D.9 HOUGHTLING, *FREDERICK8, *DAVID7, *WILLIAM (WILHELM)6, *TOBIAS5, *MATHYS4 HOOGTEELING, *JACOB3, *MATHYS COENRATSEN2 HOUGHTALING, *COENRADT1) was born February 16, 1910 in Stephentown, New York, and died July 22, 1945 in Hancock, Mass.. He married DOROTHY HOFFMAN June 04, 1932 in Stephentown, New York. She was born April 27, 1915. Dorothy was the daughter of John Hoffman and Eunice White.

Notes for ROY ELMER MOON: Roy Elmer Moon was a very loving man, who liked to hug and kiss, according to his widow, Dorothy Moon Miner. Tina visited with her in her home in North Adams, Mass. in July 1997. She is 82 years old, and not in the best of health. Her daughter Thelma was there, as were Thelma's daughters, Eunice and Charmaine.

Aunt Dorothy said that the day of Roy's death, it had rained alot. During the morning, while she was feeding her two youngest children, Roy called to her. She went into the room where he was and he pointed out that the brook (Kinderhook) was rising. She asked him to stay away from it, because it was looking dangerous.

Later that afternoon, he reported to work, on the farm of Mr. Avery. Upon completion of his chores, Mr. Avery asked Roy and a Mr. George McFee, age 75, to go to the home of the Gary's, to see if they could salvage any of the Gary's belongings, as the were not home to do so for themselves. They did go.

Aunt Dorothy says that sometime after five o'clock on the afternoon of Sunday, July 22, 1945, someone came to her door, and informed her that Roy had drowned in the brook. She said that she grabbed her babies and ran down the hill. She said, "it was lucky that I didn't kill all three of us, because I was running so fast." When she reached the brook, she handed the babies to someone on the bank, and started to go toward the brook to look for Roy. She was held back from doing so.

The Berkshire Eagle reported the story for most of the next week. In the articles, it states that Mr. Gary and his family returned home just before their home left it's foundation. He saw Roy and Mr. McFee and shouted to them to "forget the appliances, get out and save your lives". Roy was seen jumping out of a window, and hitting an embankment, which gave way immediately. His body was recovered some 200 yards down stream, caught on a tree limb. Mr. McFee never was able to get out of the house before the whole house washed away.

Aunt Dorothy told his story with such sorrow, especially when she looked at me and said, "I told him to stay away from the brook, but he just wouldn't mind me... he just wouldn't mind me." She blames Mr. Avery for Roy's death, saying he should have never asked Roy to "go down there."

The towns people of Hancock, Massachusetts collected $112.00 and presented it to Roy's widow, one week after his death. The Gary family was aided by the Red Cross, which gave them temporary shelter, clothing and food. Roy left a 30 year old widow and four small children. He indeed died a hero.

Aunt Dorothy has carried a small picture of herself, Roy and Thelma for the entire 52 years since his death. It is the only picture that she had. She said, "we were too poor to have a camera." The picture is faded, but shows a young family with so much promise. We made a copy of the picture for ourselves and several for her. It turned out that the copies came out clearer than the original. She will never be without her memories of her Roy and the life that they had together. To this day she says, "I wish I had had him here with me right now."

Dorothy went on the marry a Mr. Miner and have a set of twins. However, it was not a happy match, as "I found out that there were three or four other Mrs. Miners". She didn't elaborate and I didn't pry.

On Roy's birth certificate, it reads: Number of children born to this mother, including this birth - 2 Number of children now living - 2

Notes for DOROTHY HOFFMAN: I received a lovely letter in May, 1997, from her. You can tell that she had someone else write it. She said that she was only 30 years old when Roy died and is 82 years old now. She doesn't remember "anything" about the Moon's.

Mr. Moon was employed by United Airlines as a mechanic.

Uncle Russell encouraged several of us in the family to look into the family tree and put together a comprehensive history of the family. His death saddens us, because we know that there was much more information that he had, that we didn't have the opportunity to get from him, and the current results of our efforts will not be realized by him. His encouragement will be missed.

In a note from Stephentown: " Deborah Knapp said Russel Moon was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Knapp". Don't believe that this is true, because he was always Russell Moon and in all of his correspondence, he never said anything other than he was taken in by the Knapp's.

In March of 1997, I located Uncle Pete and Aunt Joanne after nearly 30 years of not knowing that they had moved back to New York State. In July of 1997, my husband, daughter Lindsay, and I went to visit and we had a wonderful time. Both very loving people, we enjoyed several afternoons with them, looking at pictures, talking about bygone days and even went on a town tour with Uncle Pete, when he showed us many of the places that held significance in his youth. In the months since that visit, Aunt Joanne and I spoke often on the phone. She would call me every month or so if I hadn't called and ask why I hadn't called her. We had great conversations and I felt that I had gotten to know her somewhat. She was a sweet woman, who was adored by her children and grandchildren. She was not well when I saw her, and her daughter Ann has said that she was sicker than she let on but she didn't let it keep her from having a get together at their home on Sand Bank Road and coming to Eric's house in Massachusetts for a good old fashioned meal of New Orleans gumbo and potato salad, courtesy of my husband Clint. She knew of my trip in July 1998 to New York and said that she was looking forward to me coming to see her. I regret deeply that I will not see her or talk with her again. I feel her loss deeply and feel especially cheated by the years that passed when I did not know that they had returned to Berlin and could not find them. I continue to stay in touch with Uncle Pete and will spend as much time with him as I possibly can this summer. Rest in peace, Aunt Joanne. We love you.
