Descendants of William Douglas

From Stephentown Genealogy: Roots & More

The following information was sent by Linda Mesinar. This is a Douglas genealogy as it relates to her Osgood family. There are many pictures following the genealogy. Thanks to Linda for sending this to us. Should you have any questions, you can contact Linda Mesinar.

This line goes back to Deacon William Douglas and Annie Mattle, and the details of that can be found on Douglas Genealogy which is found elsewhere on this site. The line goes: Deacon William Douglas and Annie Mattle; their son Deacon William Douglas and Abiah Hough; their son Asa Douglas and wife Rebecca Wheeler; their son William, b. 1743 d. 1811, married Hannah Cole; their son William Douglas we start with here. I have found the Margaret who Linda has here as William's wife, was Margaret Hunter. William was first married to Miriam Pease. Both William and Miriam are known to be the first male and female children born in Stephentown.

Generation No. 3

4. HARRIET MARY3 HUBBARD (EMALINE AMELIA2 DOUGLAS, WILLIAM1) was born April 14, 1845 in Tallahassee, FL, and died April 17, 19152. She married BRIG. GEN. HENRY BROWN OSGOOD, JR. June 10, 1869 in Philadelphia, PA3, son of HENRY BROWN OSGOOD and CATHERINE DANA. He was born October 09, 1843 in Portland, ME, and died March 12, 1909 in Stephentown, NY4.

Notes for HARRIET MARY HUBBARD: Harriet was affectionately known in the family as "Mummy Osgood". Is buried in Stephentown, NY We have several photo’s of Harriet and her family at the Douglas farm in Stephentown. Notes for BRIG. GEN. HENRY BROWN OSGOOD, JR.: Henry Brown Osgood was a Captain in the U. S. Army, 27th Maine, Company I, during the Civil War. In July of 1861 at the end of their term, the 27th Maine was asked for volunteers to stay to protect Washington from the Rebel forces and to wait the outcome of the battle of Gettysburg. Henry B. Osgood was one of 299 volunteers who stayed behind to protect Washington. For this they were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Later, as told in the book “A Shower of Stars”, the, government, because of poor record keeping and a lack of communication, issued medals to the 'entire' 27th Maine - even to those who did not stay. So, in 1916 it was decided by the powers that be, that ALL Medals of Honor issued to the 27th Maine be recinded. They were, but, at this time most of the veterans had passed away and the families didn't even know about the order to recind their old hero's medals. I am glad Gen. Osgood didn’t know about this. I am on the hunt for our Grandfather's medal. Someone in the family surely must have it. Will continue when I have more. LAEM 7/2001. Note: Captain Osgood later went on to become Brig. General, U.S. Army. According to cousin Isabel Cogan Krebs, his medal was in the possession of Aunti Isabel who had been living in Germany for decades and passed away in Feb 1999, and has not heard if the executor has discovered the whereabouts of the medal as yet. We'll keep on the job of locating this precious medal. Henry Osgood was a 1867 graduate of West Point Military Academy. He was appointed to the academy by President Abraham Lincoln after the battle at Gettysburg . After graduation, he had a long and distinguished career in the U. S. Army. Gen. Osgood along with his wife Harriet are buried on the hillside cemetery overlooking Stephentown, near his wife’s family home (Douglas House), still owned and occupied by the family.

5. EDWIN PUTNAM4 OSGOOD (HARRIET MARY3 HUBBARD, EMALINE AMELIA2 DOUGLAS, WILLIAM1) was born June 18, 1876 in Utica, NY, and died April 20, 1962 in Reno, NV. He married ELIZABETH CLENDENIN November 07, 1901 in Galesburg, Ill7, daughter of PAUL CLENDENIN and SUSAN DUNN. She was born November 12, 1879 in Ninevah, NY, and died October 05, 1960 in Reno, NV.

Notes for EDWIN PUTNAM OSGOOD: Elizabeth and Edwin sailed for Siam (now Thailand) where he had been appointed chief sanitary and electrical engineer to his majesty King Chulalonkorn, who later figured in the book and movie "Anna and the King of Siam". Edwin graduated from MIT. He is a descendant of Gen. Isreal Putnam and Capt. James Osgood both of the Revolutionary War, and Gen. Henry Brown Osgood graduate of West Point and Civil War Veteran. (Linda Mesinar, 4-15-98)

E.P. 'Teddy' and Bessie were married by Bessie's Uncle, Rev. Charles W. Dunn in Grama Clendenin's home in Galesburg, Ill. as recorded in Bessie's 'Birthday Book'.

Notes for ELIZABETH CLENDENIN: Nickname was "Bessie", but Gr. Granpa called her Betty in some letters from him to her. After reading the letters in the book Diedra put together (one with red cover) I have decided that Gr. Grama was a wonderfully strong child and woman. Strong in body, soul and character... she was truly remarkable and has impressed me so much that I really regret not knowing her more. I have only a little remembrance of seeing her and Gr. Grandpa when they were very old (to me at age 5 1/2). I had never seen anyone of their age before and it scared me a little, I remember. They were very gentle and kind and I was quite comfortable after first meeting them. We also have photo's of this visit and it is on video now as well as I copied it off of my parents 8mm movie film. I believe it was at Aunti Helen's house where they too lived. I so wish I knew them when I was older. Well, thanks to Gr.Grama for saving so many old letters I do feel a little like I know them. The letters are full of information as to who they were and the lives they led. What a hard time Grama and Gr. Aunt Helen had when growing up. So many of the wonderful women who were a part of their lives passed away so young. These letters are a wonderful treasure for us to have, and I hope with all my heart my girls will love this history as much as I. We have it so much easier now-a-days. The hardships our ancestors lived with, not that they knew any different - but nevertheless it was still a hard life for them, were incredible. I think the one I think of the most and causes me so much sorrow (for them) was the lack of modern medicine. So many suffered so young and died so young. We take so much for granted. I look around and see all the wonderfull conveniences we have and after reading those letters I really know how fortunate I am and should appreciate it a lot more! Bessie was very beautiful, even as a baby and young child. She had very thick curly hair and I'm told it was redish. In fact my Mother gave me a locket when I married Doug, Jennifer's dad,(I wore it on my wedding day) it is a little gold square locket with an "E" on one side and a small turquoise stone on the other. This was given to her when she was a baby from Gr. Grama and inside is a lock of Gr. Gramas red hair. I have this locket and treasure it dearly. It has little dents on it, Mom said she made these when she was teething. She must have worn the locket when little. Linda A. Early Mesinar 1/30/2001

Notes for PAUL CLENDENIN: See Paul Clendenin original page, Husband of Susie Dunn, father of Elizabeth and Helen. Paul is here because Harriet is in this program twice. Once as E.P. Osgoods sister and then the wife of Paul Clendenin.

Notes for DR. PAUL CLENDENIN: Paul was born in Lyndon, Witeside County, ILL and after the war of the Rebelion the family settled in Oneida, ILL. In some of the earlier letters from Paul to his mother he writes about his job selling books. I'm not sure what kind but he sold these books door-to-door or should I say farm-to-farm as it was a rural area. His letter was written from Victoria, not far from Galesburg, both in Knox County. He walked, or 'tramped' as he said, and had some strange experiences as noted in his letters home. After Paul and Susie married they lived a long while in Washington DC. Paul was a clerk for the Treasury Department, Bureau of Statistics. We have two addresses where they lived and am anxious to see if these homes still exist. (per Deedra 5/2001- on a trip to Washington some years back she did see a couple of these homes and photographed them, she'll try and get me copies.) Some of the letters are quite interesting, telling of how Paul went to pay his respects to Mrs. Hayes (the first lady) and another time he pays his respects to both President and Mrs. Hayes and how Sec'y Sherman made the comment on their meeting, at that time, " Oh, Clendenin - a fine Scotish name!" Sec'y Sherman maybe Gen. Sherman? I'll do a little research and see if perhaps he was the Sec'y of Defense... that would be my guess anyway. There was some mention of Paul taking medical classes while in Washington. He did become a Dr and then a surgeon in the U.S. Army. After Susan's death he married Daisey Brownson and they had Dorothea, at age 21 Daisey died. Paul then married Harriet Osgood, a sister of Edwin P. Osgood. E.P. later married Pauls daughter Elizabeth Clendenin. Making Harriet, Bessies Step-Mother and Sister-in-Law. We have a treasure of letters kept by Gr. Grama Bessie. There are many from Susie to her mother and to Pauls mother. These letters are full of information as to where they lived what they did and how the children were. He was posted in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington state, California, Sault Ste Marie Michigan and his final post was in Cuba where he died of yellow fever. His daugters did not live with him during his early years of the service, circa 1899. We have many letters to him and his mother and father who were with him on the posts, from Bessie and her Aunt Emma. Paul was very good about keeping in contact with his daughters and according to Emma's letters, very good about sending money for their care. Bessie and Helen lived, after their mother's death, with their Aunt Emma (Susies sister) in Colorado, then Burlington, Iowa where they attended school and we have a photograph of their class. They joined their father in S.Ste.Marie, Michigan with his then wife Daisey and their new little sister Dorothea.

Douglas Farm in Stephentown about 1898. During the period of time that the homestead was owned by Harriet Hubbard Osgood and General Osgood, and their children, it was referred to as "Snug Harbor" in the letters and pictures that Linda has. It was changed back to "Douglas House" and the farm "Glen Douglas" by the current owners in honor of the founders. It has remained in the family since 1765. It was an original grant from King George of England to William Douglas in 1765 of 1000 acres, originally all in Massachusetts. Now it is only 450 acres and part is in Massachusetts and part in New York.

Douglas Home, "Snug Harbor" in 1898

Harriet Mary Hubbard (left) on the front porch of the Douglas House in the late 1800's. On right, Gen. Henry Brown Osgood on the porch of the Douglas House, about 1897. Harriet was the daughter of Captain Richard S. Hubbard and Emaline Douglas, hence the continuation of the douglas line and ownership of the farm in Stephentown.

General Henry B. Osgood with wife, Harriet Hubbard Osgood, their daughter Harriet and her husband, Paul McClendenin and unknown man.

Edwin Putnam Osgood (on left) (Linda's great grandfather), and Henry D. Osgood (on right)were the sons of General Henry Brown Osgood and Harriet Mary Hubbard.

Edwin Putnam Osgood, Emma "Kemmie" Osgood, and Henry Douglas Osgood, all children of General Henry Brown Osgood and Harriet Mary Hubbard.

Harriet Hubbard Osgood (right), daughters Harriet (center) and Kemmie (left). Daughter Harriet married Paul Clendenin.

Paul Clendenin (on left) going for a swin, possibly in the Kinderhook Creek, Stephentown. In picture on right, Harriet Osgood Clendenin poses with a Shaker man at Hancock, Mass. both photos circa 1897.

Harriet O. Clendenin on Douglas property. Linda states that it looks like one of the old colonial road paths. The modern day photo on the right looks like it could have been taken in the same place.

Edwin Putnam aka: "Teddy" or "E.P." Osgood and Elizabeth "Bessie" Clendenin courted in 1899 at the Douglas Farm. They were married for 60 years and had 5 children. Elizabeth was the daughter of Paul Clendenin and his first wife, Susan Dunn. After Susan's death, he married twice more, last to Harriet Osgood. Harriet's brother, Edwin Putnam "Teddy" married the grown daughter of Paul and Susan Clendenin, Elizabeth "Bessie" in 1901. Photo on right was obviously taken in later years. Teddy died in 1962 and Bessie died in 1960.

On the back of this photo it just says "Hancock, Mass." Wonderful picture of a turn of the century picnic, Victorian style.

Haying on the Douglas Farm and surveying the property in a horse and buggy.

This was taken inside a barn on the Douglas property.

Edwin Osgood Cogan b. 1903 d. 1983, was the son of Emma Elizabeth Osgood and Bernard Cogan; Emma Elizabeth was the daughter of Edwin Putnam Osgood.

Our generous contributor, Linda Mesinar and her second cousin, Isabel Cogan Krebs, daughter of Edwin Osgood Cogan, pictured above. Isabel's line goes: Edwin Osgood Cogan & Helen Aubrey, Emma "Kemmie" Osgood & Bernard Cogan, Harriet Mary Hubbard, Emeline Amelia Douglas, William Douglas. Linda's line goes: Helen Calista Kolstrup, Emma Elizabeth Osgood, Edwin Putnam Osgood, Harriet Mary Hubbard, Emeline Amelia Douglas, William Douglas.

On the left is Linda's husband David with Isabel Cogan Krebs; on the right is Linda with Isabel's husband, Neil, taken in the barn on the Douglas property. On the left is the red barn, which is located on the property and on left, the present day Douglas Home from the back, with the red barn in the background. The barn is original from 1825.

The Douglas Pond

The Douglas Home, from the front, as it appears today. Linda says, " On this property, originally was a log cabin built on the cellar that still exists. The log cabin burned down, then the single story colonial was built. Then a second story was added to it and in the 1960's, there was another fire, although it didn't burn down, the damage was sufficient enough to have to have the home torn down. The next home - a ranch style was built and then the current residents Isabel Cogan Krebs & Neil Krebs added a second story and restored the colonial look." NEW Linda Mesinar let me know that there was going to be an Osgood/Douglas reunion during the week of October 9, 2006 and as good fortune would have it, my husband and I had planned to be in the Stephentown area during the same time. Linda graciously invited us to attend a tour of the property, and it turned into so much more. We met so many nice people and were treated as though we were family. It was a wonderful experience and so nice to see the descendents of some of the first settlers of Stephentown, continue to appreciate their ancestors and celebrate their contributions.

Thank you Linda, Isabel, Emma and everyone else we met for the warmth with which we were greeted.

Linda took us on a tour of the cellar, which is mentioned above and that was very interesting, especially knowing that it was original to the property. The current home is beautiful and filled with family mementos. The colonial feel to the house reminded me of my years of living in the area. Family pride abounds in this home.
