BRUTAL DOUBLE MURDER IN STEPHENTOWN

Jealousy Prompts Murderer

Stephentown, N.Y. Scene of Another Rural Tragedy. Murderer Attempts Suicide

October 31, 1899

Another brutal murder, surpassing in horrible details that of Nelville B. Lord of Nassau, occurred yesterday afternoon in this region. George Hermans, a farmer 50 years old, shot and killed Mrs. Rhoda Horton, 80 years old and her daughter Eliza Jane, 25 years old, in Stephentown, near Lebanon Springs. He then shot himself, but is still living, and was brought to this city (Troy, NY) in an ambulance.

The girl had until recently been a housekeeper for Hermans. Her reputation was not good, and she had had several children, one of whom is still living. Yesterday afternoon Hermans drove to the house and asked her to ride with him. She refused, and he tried to force her. Her mother interfered, and he drew a revolver and shot both dead. He then shot himself.

When asked why he did it, he said he was jealous of the girl, who was intimate with another man, and that he shot her mother for interfering. He also added he wanted to kill himself and that he hoped he should die.

The murdered woman leaves two sons and another daughter, Mrs. Marsden of Pittsfield, Mass.

THE STEPHENTOWN MURDER - Hermans will live, was jealous of an Adams man

November 1, 1899

George Hermans, the farmer who shot and killed Rhoda Horton and her daughter Eliza Jane Platt, at Stephentown, Monday, as reported in yesterday's telegraphic news, was taken to the Troy hospital at 10 o'clock yesterday morning by District Attorney's Officer Kaye and Assistant District Attorney O'Brien. It was stated last night that he many recover from the injuries he inflicted on himself after the murder. A man acquainted with Hermans called at the jail yesterday and said that Hermans was before the last grand jury on a serious charge. If Hermans recovers, he will be taken to the jail.

Hermans was jealous of Eben Rayno, according to the press dispatches, and it was this jealousy which prompted him to kill the firl and then her other. Rayno worked in Stephentown last summer, but last July he gave up his job on the farm near the murderer's home and returned to his home in Adams. Occasionally he went to see Eliza and spent some days at her home. He arrived the last time a week ago Saturday. He told a reporter yesterday that he has a father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. John Rayno, five brothers and four sisters, living in Back Road at Adams. He said he had intended to go home yesterday.

MURDERER RECOVERING

George Hermans, the murderer of Rhoda Horton and Eliza Jane Pratt (don't know if it is Platt or Pratt) of Stephentown, is recovering at the Troy hospital, from his injuries.

MURDERER GIVEN LIFE SENTENCE

March 20, 1900

George Hermans, Indicted for Two Murders, Retracted Plea of Not Guilty After Trial Was Begun, Showed No Emotion

George Hermans, charged with the murder of Rhoda Horton and Eliza Jane Pratt in North Stephentown, NY, last October, pleaded guilty to murder in the second degree in the Supreme Court at Troy yesterday. He was sentenced to imprisonment for life in the Clinton prison at Dannemora.

This sudden ending of the case was unexpected and a surprise to all connected with the court. The trial had been begun and one juror secured, when a conference of lawyers was held, resulting as described. Hermans was indicted for murder in the first degree, and at one time it was stated that a plea of guilty in the second degree would not be accepted. The case was of interest here as an Adams young man was believed to be the cause of the jealousy that inspired the murder, while the murdered woman formerly lived in North Adams.

The crime took place on the morning of October 30, Hermans is 42 years old and has a wife and six children. It is said that the murder grew out of an old feud between the Hermans and the Horton families, and that Hermans was enamored of Mrs. Horton's daughter, and that the mother objected to his presence about the Horton home.

Hermans drove to the Horton home and fired five shots at the two women, and then tried to shoot himself. He did not deny the shooting at the time. Addressing Assistant District Attorney O'Brien, he asked, "Are they dead?" When answered in the affirmative, he said, "It's funny they're dead and I'm living." Just before she died, Mrs. Horton said that Hermans fired the shots. Hermans was taken to the troy hospital, where for a long time he hovered between life and death. He finally began to recover, and a few weeks ago was able to be taken to the jail.

In addressing the court yesterday to present the matter of a plea of guilty to murder in the second degree. District Attorney Howard said that he and his officers had been working faithfully on the case for several weeks, and had obtained facts that take from the case of element of probability of murder in the first degree. He said he believed that if the jury returned a verdict of murder in the second degree that was all he could hope for. Hermans' attorneys, he said, had frankly made him acquainted with the case, and he was satisfied to accept the plea.

The attorneys for the defense said they had no hopes of securing an acquittal, but believed they could show that there was no premeditation that would make murder in the first degree. The judge decided at once to accept the plea.

District Attorney Howard moved the sentence of the prisoner and Hermans was directed by the clerk to stand up. Hermans' face expressed no emotion as he faced the clerk. He appeared very dull of compreshension and had to he asked questions several times before he could understand them. He spoke in a tone of voice so low that only those in his immediate vicinity could hear him. "Your counsel has stated that you withdraw your plea of not guilty and plead guilty," said the district attorney. Hermans nodded his head in confirmation of the statement.

Justice Furman said that was only one sentence to be pronounced in the case. He sentenced the prisoner to imprisonment in Dannemora for the term of his natural life. Herman' expression of dull unconcern did not change when sentence was pronounced.

The above transcription was originally printed in the North Adams Transcript, on the dates indicated.
